Call for Performers — The NERDY CABARET V (Deadline 11/14)

Posted by on Oct 20, 2011 in Announcements, Performer Calls, Signature Events, The NERDY CABARET | 0 comments

SPECTRA EVENTS proudly hosts a Holiday Edition of their favorite revue, The NERDY CABARET: Part FIVE! !

Cabaret is a form of entertainment featuring comedy, song, dance, and theatre, distinguished mainly by the performance venue—a restaurant or nightclub with a stage for performances and the audience sitting at tables (often dining or drinking) watching the performance being introduced by a master of ceremonies or tomfoolery.

The NERDY CABARET is audience-driven theatrical experiment in the fine art of geekdom; in this space, hipsters are encouraged to sport their fake wide-rimmed glasses, lab technicians spontaneously strip down to inflammable lingerie, and after-work-didn’t-have-time-to-change ensembles can pass as kinky. Nerdy science jokes, political sattire, deconstructive hip-hop story-telling, and sexy role-play involving inanimate objects are encouraged here. Enter at your own risk.

This month’s theme is up to YOU! What theme would you suggest for the NERDY CABARET? Suggest your idea when you RSVP HERE and you could win 5 free passes to the next show for you and your friends!

AUDIENCE: RSVP and suggest a theme for the next NERDY CABARET so we can tell you what to wear! We will post the top 5 themes, tally your votes, announce the winning theme, then encourage you to dress accordingly. Default naughty nerd gear — glasses, corsettes, stickers, bustiers, suspenders, etc — always encouraged.

ADMISSION: $8 Reduced Guest List, $10 at the Door

TELL US YOU’RE COMING: Facebook Event | Official Guest List for $8 Admission

We love collaboration, and welcome ideas that involve working with others, but will be unable to publicize/promote additional members of your performing group who are not an official part of The NERDY CABARET lineup (i.e. performing 2-3 numbers). However, you are of course welcome to submit your profile for consideration as a duo or group, with the same requirements (i.e. performing 2-3 numbers during the show).

MEET YOUR NERDY HOSTS

SPECTRA is the intellectually artsy mastermind behind Spectra Events (and their new show, the Nerdy Cabaret).

This creative nerd, introverted socialite, and femme-lovin’ Naija boi digs video games as commentary for the human experience and multivariable calculus as a metaphor for relationships.

When s/he’s not making love to a piano (or other inanimate objects), s/he’s blogging about more serious stuff at www.spectraspeaks.com, espousing un-proofed formulas for optimizing polyamorous connections, and pondering the science of love at @iqwoc on Twitter, and of course, tweeting about ticket giveaways and awesome events @spectrasevents.

IDIALIA is a fierce Puertominican poet; a proud nerd, and a lover of safe words like pancakes, hickies, and sugarmelt.

She began writing for herself, until she looked around only to realize the scarcity of voices like hers — queer brown artsy and kinky — in the media, so now she writes for everyone else; for the kid in kindergarten who cried after someone made fun of his accent, for her little sister who asked her to pass the “people colored crayon” (peach), for the transgender girl who smiled after putting on lipstick for the first time, and to the people privileged enough to ignore the injustices that exist in the world.

CRICKET (Christina Barretti-Sigal)  tries to be as many different kinds of “nerd” as possible at any given time.

She can usually be found making excuses to get dirty, whether it be grease from her bike, dirt from her garden, or paint from whichever production shop for which she’s creating sets for some theater or film production.

One of her favorite excuses to geek out and get dirty is sex. This is particularly because of the thoughtful, thorough, and utterly nerdy approach to having, improving, and unapolagetically savoring good sex that she will always be a vocal proponent of BDSM and Kink.

And now that you know how Cricket likes to get down, send her a friend request on Facebook.

Cabaret also refers to a Mediterranean-style brothel—a bar with tables and women who mingle with and entertain the clientele. Traditionally these establishments can also feature some form of stage entertainment, often singers and dancers.

THE NERDY CABARET SHOW (taking place on Wed August 31st) will feature a diverse line up of entertainment from bonafide DIVAS of all ‘tudes, personalities, and… crazy hairstyles! We’ve finally created a space where hipsters are encouraged to sport their fake wide-rimmed glasses and your came-after-work-didn’t-have-time-to-change ensemble could even pass as kinky. Nerdy science jokes, political sattire, hip-hop storytelling, and sexy role-play involving inanimate objects are all encouraged.

AUDIENCE: You are encouraged to dress like you OWN the god damn place — heels, purses with fake pups in them, red lipstick, fashion shoot makeup. Bring it! But most importantly, you are encouraged to go absolutely WILD, OUTRAGEOUS, BIG, with your HAIR! Whip it, people. Whip it!

ADMISSION: $8 Reduced Guest List, $10 at the Door

WHY PERFORM AT NERDY CABARET?

Spectra Events has been producing innovative, creative events for a wide range of audiences for over six years… we know what we’re doing.

Our events turn out a consistent mass of people, and have been hailed by many as ground-breaking, expertly curated, and all-round bad ass.

By performing at one of our events, you’ll be signing up to work with a great team of people, guaranting that your art gets the audience it deserves, and adding Middle East — a very prestigious performance venue (seriously, greats like MeShell N’Degeocello, Nneka, Saul Williams, and even Aerosmith have played there!) — to your resume. Just sayin.

But don’t take it from us, listen to what attendees and performers have to say!
