CEO, Spectra Events

The inaugural POWER awards seeks to create a supportive women’s community of changemaker professionals, whose work through innovation, business, the arts, or philanthropy, positively impact the LGBT community. For January 2012, we are very proud to feature POWER Real Estate Broker, Adriana Raines!
Adriana is the Founder and CEO of Save Your Home, a community organization dedicated to advocating for the needs of families facing foreclosure crises. Prior to founding Save Your Home, Adriana worked in a variety of management and individual contributor positions at companies including Jeymar’s Realty, LLC and The Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Adriana grew up in the heart of the city at times when the overhead train tracks covered the main roads and children played safely on the streets. Hence, she has witnessed, first hand, the transformation of Boston neighborhoods negatively impacted by the Real Estate market crash.
Check out Adriana’s remarks about what inspired her to found Save Your Home:
For the past several years, I have witnessed hundreds of families in my community lose their homes to foreclosures. The effects have not only been devastating to the family but also to the streets, neighborhoods and communities where this is taking place. It is not uncommon to drive down any given street and see at least two houses boarded up, slowly deteriorating and sinking the value of other homes a little each month.
After doing some research, I discovered that communities across the country depend on real estate tax dollars and consumer dollars in order to properly fund much needed local services, such as youth programs, safe playgrounds, career training centers etc.
I’m a mother of four children, and so this crisis hit close to home; I had to find a way to reduce the negative impact on the housing crisis on the neighborhood in which my family lives.
I decided to meet with local professionals to discuss a plan of action to alleviate this tragedy. After many months and long meetings I decided to open my own agency Save Your Home Organization, a community based organizations dedicated to advocating for community members in the event of foreclosure.
My agency’s success depends on the guidance and time of professionals such as the real estate attorneys, appraisers, mortgage lenders and community leaders, who comes together for the sole purpose of saving a families from the devastating effects of foreclosure. Agencies like mine may not get rich or make a profit but we are proud to contribute to the welfare of our communities by preventing foreclosure for families, providing professional counsel, and ultimately, keeping real estate tax dollars and consumer dollars in our communities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Boston, MA, December 5th, 2011 — Spectra Events’ The NERDY CABARET “UNWRAPPED!” Bares All for the Holidays
On Wednesday December 14th, nerds will convene at the Middle East Upstairs to celebrate (and debate) the holidays at The NERDY CABARET’s special holiday edition. The NERDY CABARET is an audience-driven theatrical experiment in the fine art of geekdom; nerdy science jokes, political sattire, deconstructive hip-hop story-telling, and sexy role-play involving inanimate objects are highly encouraged. And while each show features performers bare-ing the gift of burlesque, erotica, and drag, December’s special holiday theme — “UNRWAPPED” — is all about deconstructing and unraveling the mystery behind our popular Holiday traditions.
Local celebrity artists like Aporia (rope performer), Lana Fox (sex columnist), and Sapphira Cristal (Queen of Boston Pride, and NERDY crowd favorite) and others are bound to deliver the witty, intellectual, and subversiveness that is the show’s staple. But, acts that celebrate traditional holiday elements have been included as well. For instance, musical numbers from RENT will be performed by the students of Berklee’s Musical Theater Club.
“We couldn’t decide if we wanted to celebrate or protest the holidays,” says Spectra, the shows creative producer and co-host, “So we’ve left it up to the performers and the audience to set the tone depending on what they wear or perform.”
The show, affectionately now referred to as “NERDY” for show, typically encourages audience members to dress according to theme. For “Unwrapped”, Idalia, the show’s co-host is hoping for a few literal interpretations. “You’re supposed to wear red if you embrace the holidays, and black if you’re on the flip side. NERDY attendees are pretty creative, so I’m pretty sure someone is going to show up in ribbons and lingerie.” Here’s hoping.
Dressing according to theme is part of the fun in attending the NERDY CABARET, but the producers assure first-timers that the space is welcoming of classical nerds who prefer to “come as themselves”. To prove it, the producers are giving away one free ticket each weekday leading up to The NERDY CABARET to attendees who use the hashtag #nerdycabaret to share their responses to the question, “What Makes You Nerdy?”. Why? Because NERDS RULE.
The NERDY CABARET takes place on Wednesday December 14th. The show begins at 8 pm and goes till 10:30 pm, after which attendees can look forward to a Photo Booth to snap professional shots of their big-and-wild-haired nerdy outfits, and dance the night away to the sounds of 90s music, courtesy of one of Spectra Events’ resident DJs, Lady Spindrift. Get on the $8 guest list at http://nerdycabaretaugust2011.eventbrite.com/ or pay $12 at the door.

Limited press passes available for media professionals and bloggers. Email Spectra at info@spectra-events.com with inquiries. For more information about The Nerdy Cabaret show and Spectra Events, visit www.spectra-events.com/.

MEET YOUR NERDY HOSTS
SPECTRA is the intellectually artsy mastermind behind Spectra Events (and their new show, the Nerdy Cabaret).
This creative nerd, introverted socialite, and femme-lovin’ Naija boi digs video games as commentary for the human experience and multivariable calculus as a metaphor for relationships.
When s/he’s not making love to a piano (or other inanimate objects), s/he’s blogging about more serious stuff at www.spectraspeaks.com, espousing un-proofed formulas for optimizing polyamorous connections, and pondering the science of love at @iqwoc on Twitter, and of course, tweeting about ticket giveaways and awesome events @spectrasevents.

IDIALIA is a fierce Puertominican poet; a proud nerd, and a lover of safe words like pancakes, hickies, and sugarmelt.
She began writing for herself, until she looked around only to realize the scarcity of voices like hers — queer brown artsy and kinky — in the media, so now she writes for everyone else; for the kid in kindergarten who cried after someone made fun of his accent, for her little sister who asked her to pass the “people colored crayon” (peach), for the transgender girl who smiled after putting on lipstick for the first time, and to the people privileged enough to ignore the injustices that exist in the world.
Follow her on Tumblr and @idaliapoetry on Twitter, and maybe she’ll blow you a kiss.

Porsha O. has opened for Mae Jemison, the first African American female astronaut, MC LYTE, pioneering female hip-hop artist, Dr. Cornell West and Dr. Angela Davis. A founding member of the Chicago – based political performance group, “The Unwritten Amendment,” she uses poetry to create a dynamic flow of infra-politics that rebels against the norms and rigidity of society.

She goes on to say “I wanted to acknowledge all the musical influences that inspire and influence me–gospel, blues, jazz, world; without having to say, you may hear a little this or that. By saying Soul Roots Music , I am acknowledging all those musical genres, but all within the context of soul music.”
Villa Tali is a young, talented single mother — a Boston raised (born and bred) positive influence to the youth looking to break into the industry and change the rap industry’s view of this “good ole boys club” or “brotherhood”.

Press Inquiries
Limited number of PRESS PASSES available; please contact Spectra Events for more information and/or to be placed on the VIP Guest List.
I like to think of myself as a people person — greeter, hostess, etc. So when it came to hosting events, it just clicked: events are all about people – often groups of people you care about, and so want to feel welcome.
From the first hello to the vibe each person walks away with (and stays raving about later), it’s all within my control. So my intentions must be deliberate. I get it. And I like to think that my people skills have made a difference at each event, because I really do care and (I hope) that comes across to our attendees.
So this fall, when I had the chance to plan and lead my very own event, I figured I’d be all set; I already had an idea of what often goes on behind the curtain, so planning my own event would be easy, right?
Cue the screeching tires.
Wrong.
If I thought I cared about our events before, I had no clue how much more I would care when the fate of our newest one was in my own hands. I seriously feel like I just gave birth to a baby, and her name is GLITTER (A HollaGAY New Year’s (ish) Dance Party).
When I first finished writing the event copy – the vision of who GLITTER was meant to be — I couldn’t stop cheesing. I felt like jumping up and down showing her off to everyone, even strangers on the street. I just birthed this! Look at her? Isn’t she amazing?
But that burst of elation died a sudden death when I started putting GLITTER out into the world (Facebook, Twitter, our friend’s potlucks), and realized that GLITTER needed more of my help than I’d anticipated. It was up to me to make sure people like her, to show the world not only why I’m excited, but why everyone else should be too.
I began to think to myself, what if I suck at this? Shoot, I kind of DO suck at this… I’ve always hated details and deadlines but I’m dependent on both to make sure my baby is a success. What if I miss all of my deadlines and GLITTER flops because I couldn’t take care of her? What if no one comes to her first celebration? Why doesn’t everyone understand how much my heart breaks when they RSVP “maybe”? Why did my stupid computer decide to finally die when I need to do promo?
On days like today, when I wake up and the flier isn’t done, I don’t know how to write a press release, and the newsletter is late, it’s easy to feel defeated. But, the event must go on.
(Insert motivational music here)
So…now what? I’m at the halfway mark, yes behind on deadlines and feeling overwhelmed, but my heart is still in this. My heart is still with my baby. I know GLITTER can and will be great. I just have to work a little harder, take a deep breath (or 20) in hopes that you can all come see her and fall in love with her too.
